Lady is continuing to share space with Rana and Mara at times. They are spending overnights together in the habitat as well, and everything is going well.
Lady seems relaxed in general. When we see them come across each other in the habitat, she will usually stop and watch Rana and Mara for a little bit. Lady is a very observant and analytical elephant in general. With Mara and Rana, she doesn’t appear to be stressed, more curious about what is going on. One day, it looked like she was contemplating walking toward Rana as Rana was heading towards the trough, somewhat in Lady’s direction. But then, at the last moment, she turned decided to continue on her original path.
Even though Lady is still keeping a distance between her and the other two, it’s encouraging to see this level of comfort she is displaying. They all seem to be working it through on their own quite nicely, so we are trying to give them space and be silent observers. We monitor what is going on and how they are doing, but allow them to make choices as to what happens.
There are days Lady seems more comfortable spending time on her own, closer to the barn. On these days Mara, Rana, and Maia share space in the big yards. The pond in 4 seems to be the favorite gathering place for all of the ladies, and they can often be found out there. But true to Maia’s nature, she enjoys wandering and inevitably ends up passing through for a Lady check, and spending time by her if she is close. They both seem to enjoy eating and lazily watching each other from opposite sides of the fence.
Photo is from Yard 4. That’s Lady in the front and Mara in the distance. Rana is nearby – she’s just behind that bush next to Mara.

June 27, 2020 at 2:21 pmThat is very encouraging news! Lady is part of the group but from a distance. Someday I do hope she feels like making physical contact with Rana, Mara, or Maia. But for now Lady seems content. ❤️????❤️

June 28, 2020 at 3:57 amOh, bless her, Lady looks so content in the photo. I wonder if her bad feet may cause her to keep her distance from the others as she might feel vulnerable? However, she does appear to not want to get away from Mara and Rana. They seem to be respectful of Lady’s space which is helping lady to gain confidence. It’s wonderful to see Lady do her own thing, being free to make her own decisions.
