This morning, Lady was next to the fence dividing Yards 4 and 5. We watched her to see if she might be showing interest in heading back into Yard 5, which she did seem to be doing. We gave the other five elephants the opportunity to spend some time near the barn, while Mara and Rana received their morning treatments. That allowed us to open up Yard 5 for Lady.
Last time we gave Mara and Rana the opportunity to share a yard with Lady, it seemed to go well. So, after their treatments, we thought the three elephants might enjoy being able to share space again. The grass is getting nice and green and it’s once again becoming a verdant grazing spot. The two girls were mostly interested in the grass for a while, but almost immediately everyone knew where the others were.
At one point, Lady was at the water trough and Rana and Mara wanted to have a drink. They walked toward Lady, who became more alert, but didn’t run away. She simply took a few steps in the opposite direction, then moved to a more comfortable distance. Lady kept an eye on the other girls who were, as expected, very respectful of Lady. Like last time, everyone kept about a 20 meter distance from one another. Lady was able to use the space available to her to make sure she was comfortable and that seemed to alleviate any uneasiness she might otherwise have felt if she didn’t have a large space to explore.
