Lady and Rana share space most mornings. Usually, Rana is the more active one, moving around the entire area, and Lady adjusts her position accordingly. Rana moves around comfortably, following her nose, without too much thought, but remaining aware of Lady’s comfort. Lady is ever mindful of Rana’s position and changes her location based on where Rana is.
This morning, Rana was very sleepy – so was Maia; presumably, the two were up to something fun last night. Rana was so tired that she didn’t want to walk around to explore the piles of food left out for her and Lady. She settled under her favorite shade tree with some palms and dozed in and out all morning.
Lady wasn’t quite sure what to do without Rana defining where she walked. After waiting for Rana to do something, Lady took the lead and started rotating around the yard, checking out the piles at her rate, as she wished.
Lady seemed a little curious about Rana being different today – it’s cute. She almost seemed to be entertained by Rana standing still and drifting in and out of wakefulness all morning.
While the two haven’t had any new or exciting developments in this new routine, they are settling into it nicely…. even when Rana is too sleepy to do anything interesting.

March 4, 2020 at 6:17 pmLady is a very observant girl. My guess is she and Rana won’t trunk touch until she observes this behavior through other elephants. That’ll be a huge day for elephant lovers everywhere to see Lady finally be affectionate with her own kind. ❤️

March 5, 2020 at 3:24 amLady really has made progress from the nervous girl she was during her first weeks of arrival at GSE. She continues to show apprehension and is a little nervy still but these have been big steps for Lady. She is slowly realising that no one will harm her, that these big steps can be done in her own time and only if she wants to. I am so in awe of Rana who is the perfect companion and keeping her distance with gentleness and respect for Lady.

March 5, 2020 at 6:17 pmI’m sooo happy for both of them, but especially Lady, who is working on overcoming whatever she endured that makes her so cautious and unsure of people and other elephants. What a special friend Rana is – ever so patient and calm – just what Lady needs. I love reading these posts and when I’m done reading I stroke the elephant’s faces and ears on the screen as I send them positive thoughts and prayerful hopes. What a wonderful gift the sanctuary is for these elephants and other creatures. Thanks for keeping us updated on the progress!
