Scott and Kat’s 10th Anniversary of Arriving in Brazil

This week marks the 10th anniversary of Scott and Kat’s arrival in Brazil to build what would become Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. The beginning of their journey was fraught with miscommunications, misunderstandings, and seemingly insurmountable challenges. They landed in Brazil with the idea that there would be land available, plus a truck, and some startup funds. All of that fell through almost immediately, which meant they had to commit to starting over with a new plan.

Convincing themselves that the need was too great to walk away, that plan eventually, and with the help of many, came to fruition. But the pathway that led to sanctuary was a years-long endeavor, with roadblock after roadblock standing in the way of a home for South American elephants. But the road was also filled with new friends, hope, and determination to create a home for elephants in need who had waited so many years for rescue. Our team is proud of everything it has accomplished, but more importantly, we are honored to have built a safe place for nine elephants, to date. The move to Brazil was a giant leap of faith for Scott and Kat, but the elephants put their own faith in us daily and our gratitude is immeasurable.

If you’d like to hear Scott and Kat tell the details of their story themselves, including needing to move into the back of a fish store, a meeting where a land owner backed out last minute and their friend/translator (who was very pregnant with twins) almost punched him, and all of the animals (and people) that were left behind for them on the property, you can listen to the early Global Rumblings podcast episodes on your favorite platform or find the episode list here. Thank you for ten years of support and your love of the elephants here at ESB. We couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful and generous sanctuary family. As we look forward to next steps, we are excited about the possibilities to come and are grateful for everyone who has been part of creating this home, and continues to support our growth and a positive future for elephants to come.

Congratulations on 10 years of determination and selflessness. What you have accomplished motivated by a love of animals is awe-inspiring. I follow several animal rescue sites from around the world. The fact that animals need to be rescued from the greed, neglect, and cruelty of humans is disheartening. But I dream that people like you show us the way to a future filled with hope.

Thank you Scott & Kat for 10 years of making a difference in the lives of the nine amazing ladies we have had the opportunity to know and love, and for the many more to come!!! There is truly no way to measure the impact you have made in the lives of so many. To say you are both multi-talented and resourceful would be an understatement. You had a vision and the drive to make it happen and the world is a better place for that. You have rescued nine so far from the horrors that humans have inflicted and given them a chance for peace, dignity and autonomy, may the future bring many more along with health and happiness for all.

You have said it takes a village to rescue/relocate an elephant and you have created so many villages many times over thank you Kat and Scott for your resilience and determination and every single person who has helped along the way to get this sanctuary to where it is today. Thank you for all your hard work – it’s a wonder to see the results and to witness the ongoing stories of the elephants in your care. How much you’ve all taught us makes us much better advocates for elephants in captivity – I thank you for that also.. (Jaw dropping photo too, our world is a beautiful planet). Here’s to the next 10 years – Saude -Salud – Viva
