Sandro’s Home: Watch as He Exits His Crate

Sandro is finally home at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil after 2 ½ days on the road. He did beautifully, eating and drinking the whole time. Once the transport crate was opened, Sandro stepped out within seconds. He might be the fastest exit yet, though Bambi and Baby gave him a run for his money. He will probably stay in the barn tonight to give him some rest, but if he shows interest and has the energy to explore, who knows what the evening holds? We’ll be back for more updates soon!

Don’t forget that you can order a welcome basket for Sandro! https://shop.globalelephants.org/product/welcome-home-basket-for-sandro/

I was fortunate enough to see him walk out of the crate live and boy, he walked out pretty quickly! Thank you to everyone who fought so hard to make this happen. Sandro is finally home!🥰

Home sweet home. Sandro is now in the best place he’s ever been. He had to wait a lifetime to find a place of love and tender care. Blessings and safe night.

The GSE team never ceases to amaze me!! Congratulations on such a successful transport of Sandro to the life he deserves. Who would have thought that such misinformed people would try to prevent Sandro from having the rest of his life at GSE? It’s so disgusting.
I do have a question: I thought male Asian elephants had tusks, but apparently some do not, according to what I read. Has Sandro ever had tusks (that maybe were removed in his past)?

Sandro has never had tusks. The two male Asian elephants in South America were both tuskless.

In India they’re referred to as makhna: A male Asian elephant that naturally does not grow tusks.

Magnificent video with close-ups of this, huge, bull! Loved watching him dust himself, eat, drink, and, walk, in freedom! He is, so, calm, and, curious. So, very, happy to see his relaxation, and, confidence! He is more than ready to enjoy life, finally! Gorgeous man! Thank you for giving him his, new, life!

    Why doesn’t Sandro have tusks?

He, like Tamy, was born without tusks. That’s not uncommon in Asian elephants.

Sandro saw and smelled the sand and he went, “Oh, yeah. I know who I am—I’m an elephant.”
