Scott was going to try to do a live at dinner, but Sandro had other plans. He is out wandering where there is no internet, so Scott recorded a video so no one goes through withdrawal for the evening.
Sandro has been out wandering, but still receiving his normal diet along with some additional food since he is under weight. His explorations are good for his muscles and strength, since both are not where they should be. As he walks away you can see his pronounced joint issues in his hips and knees. But he continues to do well and everyone keeps falling more in love with him.
If Sandro is sleepy tonight, Scott will probably not do a nighttime live, so that the big gentleman can get some rest (Sandro not Scott 😉). He will check on the camera before going down to make sure he is not sleeping.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

September 19, 2026 at 7:42 pmI can’t even imagine how he’s feeling being surrounded by all the things he should’ve had to begin with. Glad he’s comfortable ‘adventuring’ already. Both Scott and Sandro (the gentlemen) should get some rest instead of doing a nightime live😉🤭🥰

September 19, 2026 at 7:46 pmI swear that this boy Sandro knew from the get-go that he was going to a good place with people who were only there to help him. I just know he knew!

September 19, 2026 at 9:20 pmI’m so happy for Sandro and his new life at GSE! He looks like he’s lived at the Sanctuary forever — so calm in his exploration of all the yards. Thank you for all of the updates!

September 19, 2026 at 10:19 pmSo very amazing how he is just taking it all in. It’s like you let him loose and he went for it. He is so happy. I swear he looks like he has a permanent smile on his face. It’ll be nice once you guys get to examine him and see more what’s going on with him give him any help he needs. I think he’s gonna be pretty good for you guys. He seems to be a pretty easy-going, cool guy. Again, you guys are wonderful thank you for all you do. Let’s not forget Baby and thr other girls during all this too.

September 20, 2026 at 2:33 amSandro is looking great, He must feel excited to roam in freedom, feeling earth instead of concrete and confinement. How fast their life can change from very ugly into a touch of paradise.
Endless thanks to the team and everyone who made this possible.

September 20, 2026 at 9:28 amCongratulations to the entire team on this great achievement. I truly wish there were more people like you all over the planet. There would be so much more respect, peace, love, and compassion.
Sandro is simply wonderful!
But I’d like to know—based on your experience in Tennessee—is it normal for a male elephant to be more bold and adventurous than the females? Or is it really just Sandro thinking, “I’ve been waiting six years for this; I’m not wasting another minute!”?
But watch out, Sandro! Everyone knows that when you start exercising again, you realize you aren’t as young as you used to be—and you end up sore the next day! 🤣🤣🤣
I wish you many happy years ahead!
Thanks again to the whole team for standing up to the mayor and the “Red Flash.”
YOU are the heroes of the story!

September 20, 2026 at 2:16 pmit’s definitely more individual than anything. Ned was one of the most frightened elephants we’ve ever met. even a pumpkin scared him. so it’s more of who Sandro is than anything guided by his gender.

September 20, 2026 at 2:17 pmTruthfully, it depends on personality a lot of the time as much as it does male/female. Sandro seems to have been ready to go!

September 20, 2026 at 10:27 amHe is quite a beautiful elephant. His face is lovely and expressive. I would love to know his standing height. The shoulder height of elephants is so fascinating. I believe the tallest one, they know of, in India now is 10’6″. Sandro looks very tall. I hope he lives a long time at the sanctuary and that you can make up, to some degree , the laxity of the quality of his life before he got here. He is an old guy, but there are elephants who live into their 70’s, even in captivity.
Kat Blais says
September 20, 2026 at 2:15 pmthere are elephants to live into their 70s, but mostly in Asia. average lifespan of a captive Asian elephant in the US and Europe is still mid 40s. 70s in zoos is very rare unfortunately.
Sara says
September 20, 2026 at 2:15 pmWe hope he has a long life here as well. We don’t know his official height yet. We’ll have to give him a chance to get more comfortable with the team before they can measure him. They won’t have to be touching him to do it, but they’ll need to be close.
