Sandro Searches His Hay

Sandro doesn’t need much help keeping busy, even though “busy” to him might mean a nap or a splash in the water–or alternately a brisk walk through the yard; it’s his choice. But his caregivers like to leave snacks for him throughout the habitat so he has snacks even when exploring, just as they do for the female elephants. Right now, it’s great for him to enjoy a few extra bites that might help him bulk up, plus he has the fun of finding nice surprises throughout the day.

Here, Sandro is visiting a pile of food that he started snacking on earlier and decided to return to. He’d spread his hay around and eaten most of it, but there was still some hidden produce that had been covered up by leftover hay or palm leaves. Sandro likes to sort through his piles of leftovers for hidden fruit and veggies and is delicate in how he picks pieces up. He’s not a rushed eater, but he does seem to enjoy discovering extra tasty bites underneath the brush.

If there’s such a thing to describe eating as graceful, well Sandro sure eats gracefully🙂‍↕️🥰
