We are officially launching our #Sanctuary4Mara Fundraiser! DONATE HERE!
As most of you know by now, the lovely, infinitely cute, heart-stealer Mara is our next rescue! She is currently undergoing her 30-day quarantine at the Buenos Aires EcoParque and her rescue will be occurring in late March/early April. She will be joining Maia, Rana, and Lady in the Asian Elephant Habitat. She is spunky, vocal, intelligent, inquisitive and we can’t wait to get to know her better and share her adventures with each of you.
The City of Buenos Aires is paying for Mara’s relocation costs (her transport, etc), but they aren’t covering everything. There are still some costs that are not included in their budget – like the flights for our transport team to Buenos Aires, hotels (for the humans), meals (for the humans), rental cars for the trip to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, gas for our vehicles, and extra treats for Mara on the road. Her rescue itself will take 4-5 days, and our transport team will fly down several days before the transport occurs.
To cover all our anticipated costs, we need to raise $7,270. We don’t like to ask for more than what we need, so, yes, that is a fairly precise estimate (although there will definitely be nights where Scott foregoes a hotel room and sleeps outside with Mara).
Any additional funds we raise over that – or if we end up coming in under budget – will remain earmarked for Mara and will go towards any of her medical/care costs. While her feet are better than that of many other captive elephants, she does have an ongoing issue that requires daily foot soaks at the EcoParque, and we plan on continuing that once she arrives. She also has an issue with one of her front legs (an old injury that healed incorrectly) so we will include joint supplements in her daily diet and natural anti-inflammatories to assist with any possible discomfort.
We are incredibly grateful for all that the City of Buenos Aires and the EcoParque are doing to get Mara to her forever home (& her future elephant friends), we just need your help covering the Sanctuary’s portion of the 1710-mile (2760 km) journey of a lifetime, to give Mara the most priceless gift of all – Sanctuary.
