Rana visited Ramba’s grave yesterday and stayed there for several hours. She was still at the grave site at dinner time, so we took the opportunity to visit with her. Rana was quiet and seemed more reverent than sad. She seemed to be in quiet reflection, as her face was serious, yet bright. We fed her on Ramba’s grave (pictured here). Maia showed up in the area while we were feeding Rana, so she enjoyed her dinner nearby. Scott stayed with them while they ate, to be present and to pay his respects as well.
Once they finished eating, Maia walked over to Rana, as if to spend time with her. Once Maia joined Rana, Scott left to give them space to interact and focus entirely on each other without the distraction of a human on a 4wheeler.
Our focus is always on the elephants, and what is best for them, and how we can help them deepen their relationship with each other. Having a human presence shifts things with the elephants, no matter who that human is, which is why sometimes the best thing we can do is to leave them alone with each other.
This means we don’t know what happened after Maia joined Rana at Ramba’s grave, but we hope Maia provided some comfort and support to Rana.

January 10, 2020 at 6:32 pmWhat more do we need to know that elephants are sentient beings than to hear this deeply moving story about Rana visiting Ramba’s grave. Tears and love for Rana abound and we too miss Ramba.

January 10, 2020 at 7:20 pmMy heart, my heart, my heart. I’m hoping they were a comfort to each other, maybe all they needed was each other’s presence and acknowledgment. Whatever each may have been looking for, I hope they found it.

January 10, 2020 at 9:24 pmThank you for this lovely and very moving update.
It just shows how incredibly sensitive and intelligent elephants are.
Rana is free to remember and grieve the loss of her sister as she should be, and I also hope that Maia is OK and able to be of comfort and support to her.
Tears of love and support to you all.
We miss you terribly beautiful Ramba ?????

January 11, 2020 at 8:28 pmBless their sweet souls. Not easy when you lose a friend. Guida left a hole in Maia’s heart. Good to see she is tending to Rana and the empty spot in her heart for Ramba. Maybe Lady can bring them all closer together once she feels more comfortable around them to let them in.
