Caregiver Shirlei has been working with Rana on her checkups and morning treatment regimen. Rana is very soft with Shirlei and Shirlei is playful in return. It’s charming to see the two of them work together.
Rana has been squeaking a little bit more lately during these sessions, sometimes to get everyone’s attention. She doesn’t do it often but, when she does, it can align with the end of a treatment session or when someone has stepped away for a moment too long. Shirlei was going down the checklist of things that she was working on with Rana and asked, “Okay Rana, what’s next? Oh yes – time to check your girlie bits!” Those of you who have followed Rana since her arrival know she came to sanctuary with a significant vulva infection that had never previously been treated and took months to resolve. It’s something we check and rinse with an herbal wash on a regular basis. Rana looked up and made a giant squeak, expressing either her seemingly happy agreement, or that Shirlei needed to move a little quicker so that her treats arrived sooner. Either way, her humans found it rather endearing, which just caused Rana to squeak again.

December 27, 2022 at 2:55 pmHow lovely! I would love a video of Rana and Shirlei in a treatment session if you can? I’m interested in how Rana is especially gentle with Shirlei. How does this manifest? Thank you. So glad her “girly bits” are better

December 27, 2022 at 3:19 pmWe don’t generally take videos of treatment sessions but there is the occasional photo. Cameras tend to disrupt the process and we want to make sure the elephants are at ease. It’s hard to describe how these things manifest, though Rana might be more light around Shirlei and seem more comfortable during the process. You can just get a sense of how they respond to individuals, whether they seem to do the behaviors more readily or seem at ease in their presence.

December 27, 2022 at 3:30 pmWhere is that clip John mentions? I’ve looked for it, it used to be in her page but now I can’t find it. If found I’m sure posting it again would be a treat for everyone.
