Mara spent the day playing in the mud wallow, and Rana has been in the cutest mood. We aren’t sure why, but she has been super cheeky and smiley all day. Just like the rest of us, some days are great days for no apparent reason. Bambi was in Yard 2, and Rana spent some time hanging out near the fence. Bambi spent a lot of time touching Rana’s head, while Rana just stood there, leaning on the fence with a giant smile on her face. Rana’s happy mood has somehow made her extra charming today. We didn’t even know it was possible.

December 26, 2020 at 3:01 pmCute, Charming…and a little Cheeky.
3 words with a c that describe elephants in general perhaps ? 🙂
Love the photo, it might has to do with the angle but they both look a little extra Cheeky, as if they both think
“Ok girl, let’s pose and put on our most innocent face and then let’s continue to be Cheeky, these humans won’t know…” 🙂

December 26, 2020 at 7:51 pmLOVELY LOVELY ? RANA❤️?. SHES SUCH A SWEET LADY!! IM SURE SHE HAS MANY DAYS SHES SO ENDEARING WITH HER YOUNGER GIRL FRIEND HERD! THAT ?BAMBI IS IS HILARIOUS GAL WITHIN HERSELF AND I THINK RANA ENJOYS HER COMPANY AS ?MARA IS NOT FEELING SO WELL WITH HER INTESTINAL ISSUES? SO I THINK ITS NATURAL THAT RANA IS GOING TO GRAVITATE TO A FUN FRIEND‼️ I THINK NOT UNLIKE HUMANS LOOKING FOR GOOD HUMOUR AND FUN OCCASIONALLY!?. SURE WISH U HAD A VIDEO OF THESE FUNNING GALS?

December 26, 2020 at 8:11 pmSounds like she was very happy about Bambi. Maybe the two discussing facial skin and how Bambi wants her face to look like Rana’s and wanted to know what it felt like. Her skin is coming along nicely but isn’t quite there yet, right?
But, maybe it was the other way around. Or both. Or just nothing in particular.
A question. How do orphaned baby elephants know to dust and take mud baths? Is it something that keepers and carers need to teach them?
Kat Blais says
December 27, 2020 at 9:36 amBambi’s skin is much improved since her arrival, but she still has a few dry patches. As far as orphan elephants, so much of that is instinctual. But they also learn many things from watching the older elephant’s behaviors. Other elephants can always teach things and help in ways we cannot. 🙂

December 26, 2020 at 9:32 pmThis short but powerful little story makes me so happy. These creatures are really “therapy elephants” for us around the world, and they don’t even realize it. If they only knew… Thank you for taking the time to bring us these vivid moments.

As we move into 2021 we look to your herd increasing, more friendships to make and more of those smiles, sweet angel. Virtual hugs for you and for every living being at ESB.
