Of course, we can’t talk about how Mara has changed in the past month (see yesterday’s post) without talking about how Rana has evolved during this time. Like Mara, Rana has also gained a best friend.
After Ramba passed, Rana reverted to her people-oriented self. That has completely changed in the past few weeks. She is still sweet and affectionate with those she loves, yet her humans now seem to be in the periphery of her life. Mara is the center of her universe. As it should be.
Their relationship is beautiful and, no matter what is going on, she is always aware of where Mara is and what Mara is doing. She is continuously checking in with Mara. Their bond is incredibly deep and moving to witness.
As we often say, elephants mean more to each other than any human ever could. When an elephant finds another elephant that resonates with them, nothing else seems to matter. That’s where Rana is right now, with a very cheesy grin.
They are providing for each other in a way that no human possibly can, and Rana couldn’t be happier.

June 14, 2020 at 2:29 pmThe last month has seen great change for Mara. Not only has she found a soul mate but she has freedom to do as she wishes, a fabulous habitat to live in and humans to look after her health and appetite. Rana has benefitted from Mara’s arrival in ways she could never have dreamed of. She had a wonderful friend in Ramba and to again find a strong friendship with Mara is more than we could ever wish for this gorgeous girl. So happy for them both…such a beautiful story.

June 14, 2020 at 4:55 pmYes, can humans understand how sentient elephants are. Their commitment and connection to eachother is almost supernatural from a different planet. Earth before mankind.

June 15, 2020 at 5:27 pmIt really is a joy to watch them together and know how incredibly happy they are together. I’m convinced they knew each other when they were younger. Mara and Rana being reunited at the sanctuary really is a magical thing. My only hope is that when you all are able to rescue more elephants we see similar responses from Maia and Lady!
