Quiet Treatments While Lady is Near

Because of Lady’s ongoing foot and leg troubles, she’s been staying closer to the barn for treatments. So, in the morning, she got her foot and leg work done in Yard 3. Bambi and Guillermina were across the other side of the fence in Yard 4, fairly close to where Lady was standing. Her not feeling a hundred percent has made Lady more sensitive to what is going on around her, so the caregivers knew they’d need for Bambi’s treatments to be more low key than normal.

Bambi and Guille had been in a silly mood earlier in the day. Guillermina was making her little cute noises and Bambi was pulling on Guille’s trunk. The caregivers tried to encourage the two to keep their energy more on the lower side, so they gave both girls a little attention to keep them focused.

Both Guille and Bambi seemed to take the hint and they were very relaxed. But that doesn’t mean that they weren’t also a little silly – just in a quieter way. Bambi was being checked for ticks, so her left leg was up on the fence. Guille started imitating her; though she was facing the other direction, she put her own foot up on the bars of the fence, right next to Bambi’s. They were standing back-to-back, so they were like mirror images of each other. Of course, this was classic Guillermina behavior, as she tried to get a little bit of extra attention and some extra treats. The elephants were calm during the entire encounter and their presence was easy going enough that Lady wasn’t bothered.

    What a fantastic, photographic moment!!!

I’d be curious to see Lady’s foot in comparison to these two footsies.😄

We tend not to show photos of Lady’s feet, simply because they are managed differently from the others. We keep some nails longer to take pressure off of other parts of her foot sometimes – and use other techniques to make her comfortable. They aren’t pretty in the way the other elephants’ are and it’s not something that all people would understand.
