Sanctuary is a word that has such a powerful meaning, it is more than just a name that is flippantly used to gain attention. All of you who follow the girls and our work know that providing true sanctuary means everything to us. It is about getting to know each individual elephant in order to cater to what they need from sanctuary, in that moment, to move forward on their journey of healing. That is part of why we are proud to announce that Elephant Sanctuary Brazil has become the first sanctuary within South America, of any kind, to earn accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). We are also the first elephant sanctuary located outside of the US to become accredited.
Accreditation not only looks at peer-review care standards, but also examines ethics, financial stability, and safety, among other measures. We are grateful to GFAS for creating an organization that holds sanctuaries up to a higher standard and allows the public a way to search out true sanctuaries. Although it was a bit of an arduous process at times, it was worth it to become part of a group of people who are striving to make the world a better place for captive animals around the globe.

QUESTION: Would it be possible for you to rescue a very sad elephant from a Mexican zoo? If so, what would the procedure be?

But, as most of our followers know from the years of work that some of the rescues have taken, it is rarely a quick process. But people/groups are trying.
