Volume on!!
Pocha and Guillermina are some of the chattiest elephants we’ve ever known – but Pocha currently holds the title of loudest trumpeting elephant we’ve ever crossed paths with. In fact, she’s so loud that if you’re standing near her and she trumpets when you aren’t expecting it, you can get truly startled.
While it’s extraordinarily loud to us, for Pocha, it’s her regular-old everyday trumpet. Just another thing that makes her unique among our growing herd of elephants.
We were trying to catch her trumpets on video during night feed, but since she’s an elephant, the first time we pulled out the camera she got quiet. The second time she obliged, although not quite as loud as usual. At the end, we are laughing because Guille was scratching her face on her mom’s face. ☺️

June 12, 2022 at 2:15 pmSo grateful to Scott and Kat for sharing these moments with us! I realize there’s an incredible amount of work that you all do every day to make sanctuary happen — for instance, getting up in the middle of the night to feed the girls — so not glamorizing your life! But I can imagine that the rewards of being able to relate to the girls personally like this are deeply profound. Your gentleness with all the girls touches my heart and I appreciate these videos and commentaries more than I can say. Thanks for keeping us connected.

June 12, 2022 at 2:55 pmyou’re welcome. we feel it’s part of what we owe them in telling their honest stories. not all puppies and rainbows but the good and bad along their journeys as they try to find their way back to being an elephant. pretty photos are easy, but it doesn’t educate people about the reality of captivity for such an emotionally deep and intelligent being. it is exhausting at times, but also rewarding in a way that words don’t do justice. and we get to share this life with someone we love. ❤️

June 12, 2022 at 2:32 pmThat was lovely thank you, these two are really making themselves at home, just what we’ve always dreamed of ❤️
So looking forward to more of their personalities going forward.

June 12, 2022 at 2:46 pmOh my goodness they are so much better already. It looks like they like human affection? They are just so grateful to be out of that horrible place they existed in. They see they can trust humans. Ty all for what you do. ❤️

June 12, 2022 at 2:52 pmyes, they are affectionate, but not towards everyone. pocha is testing some of the caregivers a bit. and guille can be forceful in her actions. so there is definitely an awareness to being close with both of them.
