Elephants seem to get great enjoyment from eating a watermelon – and there’s nothing quite as satisfying as listening to and watching them eat one. Because the girls tend to like the fruit so much, we often use it when doing basic check-ups, training, and medical treatments.
A few days ago, everyone but Pocha had walked away after eating, to go graze and find other goodies in the habitat.. She so rarely is close to the fence all by herself, so the team rolled a whole watermelon her way. She was so pleased by this surprise that she hurriedly tucked the watermelon into her trunk and walked away with it, before another elephant came by. Pocha was determined to savor the whole thing without sharing, which she did, to her great delight.

September 27, 2022 at 2:08 pmIt’s great to see Pocha making independent decisions, knowing what she wants, and taking care of herself! Seems like a significant development … is there growing evidence of a shift in her self-awareness and self-care?

I’m so happy they are at the Sanctuary safe from harm and well cared for after all those years in that pit of tunnels I can’t imagine them getting many yummy treats like this unless when Scott and crew came to visit them so live it up girls there’s plenty more where that came from! 😘 🐘
