Ramba’s caregivers talk to us every day. They send photos, let us know how she’s doing, and sometimes ask questions. We were talking yesterday about her dung, yep poop discussions are par for the course, and we asked if she eats papaya. The girls had never tried it with her.
Papaya seems to be a weird thing with elephants, our girls here love it; we use it during training because it’s a favorite. In TN it was very different. Not only did the girls not like it, but most of them showed disgust in it by stepping on it forcefully, kicking the bits, or throwing it (not at anyone). At our barn, we had only one elephant who ate it- Misty. The thing is, she didn’t seem to like it. She made squinty faces and actually drooled a bit while eating it. We told her she didn’t have to eat it, but she forged ahead until it was gone, and even had some of Dulary’s. Thankfully, Ramba falls into the South American category of liking it.
