Muddy Girls in the Rain

When we say that the elephants love the rain, there can be no doubt by watching this video that it’s true. Though it was only sprinkling by the time this was recorded, it had previously been raining much harder, which filled the mud wallows and created lots of puddles to play in. Here, Rana and Mara are relaxing and resting from the storm, occasionally splashing themselves with mud. You can see that they’d obviously been getting dirty prior to the video’s recording, because both girls are covered in water and mud, which they clearly enjoy.

Mara is standing in the foreground with Rana in the back. At this point in the afternoon, Rana was more interested in splashing herself than Mara, who seemed to just want to enjoy the weather and squish around in the mud. All-in-all, it was a rather uneventful afternoon, which meant the elephants really had the chance to take in the day on their own terms.

Are they watching you filming them ? In this video I got a feeling that they felt you were intruding on their mutual mud contemplations .

They know we are there, but didn’t give any indication that they were bothered. When they go about their business, that’s generally a good sign.
