In this video taken by Ingo, we overhear a conversation between Pocha (left) and Guillermina (right). Of course, we don’t know what they are telling one another, but they do appear to be casual and relaxed. When an elephant is becoming more comfortable in her space, she may become more conversational, even making some of her sillier vocalizations. Pocha does most of the “talking” here, while Guillermina responds more slowly and deliberately, seeming to try to copy some of her mother’s noises.
Pocha makes a honking-type noise that none of the girls here make and that’s beyond charming. You can also see her tap her own trunk, which is also a form of communication and a behavior some elephants will do when they are vocalizing. The two of them will be welcome additions to our growing sanctuary orchestra.

October 26, 2021 at 3:08 pmSo very cute! I never knew elephants made those noises nor have I ever heard them until I started becoming involved with the Sanctury. I’ve of course heard trumpeting but those squeaking honking deep rumbles are a huge treat for sure now how do they do that they sound so different I could listen and watch them forever!

October 26, 2021 at 3:18 pmPocha makes some noises that we’ve not had an elephant make at sanctuary and they are very charming. Soon we will have a whole orchestra.

October 26, 2021 at 8:50 pmWow that’s some real conversation going on! They have their own office space to chat over the day and looks to me like Guillermina is getting comfortable in her new “safe space”. My heart is smiling watching them be calm inside them crates. Soon, they come!

October 26, 2021 at 10:40 pmSoooooo, I literally laughed out loud…I know I wasn’t the only one. So I had to watch it AGAIN. Yep, I laughed out loud a second time! ESB, are you sure you aren’t getting your first “Elephant Seal” in Pocha?! She’s a hoot for sure, mom and daughter sure are having fun hanging and honking in their crates aren’t they?!?! 😄

October 27, 2021 at 2:03 amMy thoughts are that they may be discussing the pros and cons of getting in the crates and seeing where exactly everyone seems to want to take them to with such eagerness and persistence.” They don’t seem to be taking them away do they momma”. “I know Guillermina, I was thinking that too. Should we try it. It can’t be worse than here can it ?”

October 27, 2021 at 2:53 amThe night parties will be something to see and hear for sure!! It maybe so loud your neighbours will sell out and move away!…More space for more elephants then…:-)))…Still worried about that long trip but less so. Girls are being really well prepared for that. With no stress or pressure…They LOVE the containers, and new views left and right and all the nice food and attention: stroking and gentle touching by Ingo and others…:-) The new life has started already for them and they know it! And the chatting is all about those changes and what is coming…I know it! I can feel it, deep in my old, rusty bones…xoxoxoxox

October 29, 2021 at 7:33 pmI think Pocha is telling Guillermina….don’t be afraid, be brave my darling, there are sights, smells and sounds you have never even dreamed of…..trees, greenery, so much room, no walls, and soft ground to walk on, when we get to this wonderful place called Global Sanctuary for Elephants.
