It was dinner time and we were in the elephant kitchen putting together each elephant’s individual buckets of fruits and veggies–plus plenty of hay–and set out to take food to all the girls, but Rana and Mara provided us with a challenge. We weren’t immediately sure exactly where in Yard 4 the two were, since sometimes they get pretty deep into the habitat–and that’s wonderful, since it means they’re exploring and grazing. The caregivers drove around the perimeter of the yard on the 4-wheelers looking for them for about 20 minutes, until they finally found the elephants who, in the meantime, had headed closer to the barn. 

Though the girls know roughly when we’ll be coming by with their evening meal, we try to mix things up and feed them at slightly different times. Sometimes, as in this case, the elephants relocate themselves instead of waiting for us, and it almost seems like they’re having fun with us (and maybe they are). Eventually, they settled into one spot and we met them there, placing their food along the fence. Once they were finished eating, they got access to the yards near the barn, so they had the opportunity to roam throughout Yard 4 or stay closer in, should they show interest in that.
