Maia doesn’t usually play favorites when it comes to food, but she has a special love for jackfruit. Jackfruit is incredibly sticky, has a sickly strong smell, and is definitely an acquired taste. But most of the girls really like it, and Maia will follow that smell anywhere.
Thankfully the jackfruit trees grow on the other side of the property. To Maia’s (and Shirlei’s) joy, they are currently in season.
This video is Maia trying to eat a touch underripe, 2-3 foot long (just under a meter long), jackfruit. Despite her size, it doesn’t quite fit in her mouth whole. It did however make her afternoon, and caused some smiles watching her try.

¡El lenguaje corporal de Maia masticando el fruto, es inolvidable!, ¡Ella es muy graciosa!
Me encanta que Maia sabe que la fuerza de su pata fractura “objetos”, divertido y terrorífico al mismo tiempo! ?❤

July 12, 2020 at 11:57 pmThere are no words to describe how sweet this is.
I could just watch elephants being elephants all the time!
Weird to think that when a human being is eating like Maia with the jackfruit, oh dear, I would cover my eyes and ears or run away from that person.
But when an animal, esp darling elephants, eats all juicy and loud and mouth open and well, eumh, let’s be honest, eumh messy 🙂 I just melt and can’t stop watching and listening and you are just so happy seeing and knowing they are loving their food.
Love it.
Thank you for putting a smile upon our faces and for warming our souls with this wonderful video.

July 13, 2020 at 9:50 amAre the trees actually in their yards? Did Maia pick the jackfruit herself, or are you guys giving it to her? When the fruits are that big, did she step on it first? And was that a bunch of jackfruit juice coming off at the beginning of the video, or something else?

July 13, 2020 at 6:57 pmThe jackfruit trees on our property are not in the yards. There is one by the office and a couple just past the African barn. So they can only get them when we pick them. There are many techniques to try to eat them when they’re that big, it depends how soft they are. Maia did step on it to break it. and yes, that was jackfruit juice.

July 13, 2020 at 5:14 pmIs there any chance of her getting it stuck in her throat?
Kat Blais says
July 13, 2020 at 6:54 pmMaia actually has a small mouth for an elephant. If it can get in her mouth, it can get down her throat. But, although she loves her food, she does have enough manners to chew it and make sure it all goes well. 😉
