You know those people who seem to have an infinite amount of energy, but, then, the moment they stop moving, they get so tired they almost fall asleep? Maia is that type of elephant. She’s generally so bright-eyed and energetic, but once she stops to eat, you can see her eyes slowly closing most days as she struggles to choose “Do I nap first or eat first?”
This happens frequently enough that she has established “napping/eating” spots. This morning, Kat fed her breakfast under one of her favorite spots, aptly named “Sleepy Tree,” and when Scott went by around thirty minutes later, she was napping.
While she was already sleepy and slow when it was filmed, this video is slowed down even more to show her ear flaps. She is the only elephant at the Sanctuary right now who will alternate ears as she flaps, and you can really see it in this video. If you watch until the end, you can see her decide that, yes, she is too sleepy to take that last bite.
