Maia’s Pre-Breakfast Mud Bath

While Lady was spending time in the male Asian yard, the other elephants were gathered in Yard 5 between the pond and the barn yards. They were in good spirits and a little rumbly. Everyone was relaxed and very near each other rather than being spread out or situated in groups.

Once the caregivers opened the gate to bring them into Yards 1-3 for breakfast so yard 5 could be cleaned, the elephants were fed and were casually enjoying it. All except for Maia. Even before eating (which is astonishing), Maia couldn’t help herself and went straight to the mud wallow and had a very exciting time on her own. Eventually she joined the other girls and all of them were being social and sweet with one another. Seeing all five elephants interacting in this way is charming and a heartwarming way to spend the morning.

If I remember correctly you posted that she had a cool down before breakfast another morning recently. She’s obviously completely confident that there will always be food for her when she turns up and this girl does love her cooling and insect protection “Facilities” . Lovely to hear they were all hanging out and rumbly

Just to confirm, is “Maia” the daughter of the Mom who died at your sanctuary? They were, cruelly, kept in a, totally, stone enclosure at a zoo!

Guillermina is the elephant who arrived at sanctuary with her late mother, Pocha.
