Maia Zoomies!

Guida had her silly moment yesterday, where Maia wasn’t sure she wanted to join in, and today was Maia’s turn. We heard lots of commotion from the girls this morning before breakfast. Since we live up the hill, we have the ability to run down and check anything out at any time. Upon arrival, it was clear Maia was having one of her over the top playful moments.

We have mentioned before that when an elephant gets this silly, there can be a fine line between play and aggression. Maia was all play the entire time, but neither Guida nor Rana wanted to join in. You will see Guida goes to leave a few times, but Maia wants to be close. Rana watches from a bit of a distance, tail out, ears flapping and lightly vocalizing, but she doesn’t go over to join in.

The video just shows the tail end of things, the beginning was much more over the top, and this kind of play can be intense. The first time Maia did it after being at sanctuary for only a few months, Guida left the yard. The energy that comes off of an elephant when they do this is fairly intense. Maia stayed happy the entire time and eventually mellowed out with some hay.   And for those wondering, we are on the other side of a fence.
