Video: Maia Tries On the New Mud Wallow for Size

Last week, we had a chance to refurbish the water trough in Yard 4. Our team dug up some of the area around the trough and plumbed a water line so that we can fill the wallow with the emptied trough water. And, of course, whenever you turn over fresh dirt, elephants are overjoyed.

After we were finished, Maia was nearby and decided to have a bit of a mud party. She would get water from the trough and make mud from the fresh dirt, then repeat over and over again. We attempted to clean the water trough but, as she continued to make mud piles, her messy trunk was making the water dirtier and dirtier. It quickly became obvious that our task was futile and would have to wait until another time.

Once she was finished playing around, Maia went to the new mud wallow and splashed around a bit before climbing in. Though the wallow wasn’t exactly Maia-sized, she squished herself in pretty quickly. Scott compared her to a cat, somehow managing to fit itself into a small box. You can see in the video that she easily makes herself right at home. The others seem to be enjoying the improvements as well, since they are covered in mud pretty often. We expect they will continue to make their own modifications until everything is just right.

I watched the video on Youtube. It’s a keeper! Maia looks so delighted with herself. It also showed a different perspective on just how big elephants are.

Ms Maia and her Mud-Pies! I don’t think we need to worry about her not getting enough to eat! 😁. So happy to see her happy – and glad the other girls are enjoying the new spa!
