Maia continues to hang out in Yard 5. She seems very content to be grazing there. As the creeks are flowing well these days, they provide a pristine water source convenient to grazing and a small collection pool for squishing and coating herself in mud. As a result, she isn’t leaving her favorite pasture often.
When she needs a break, we catch her blobbing in the shallow end of the Yard 5 pond. We often describe her as a pond blob and occasionally post photos of it, but pictures don’t capture what it means to be a pond blob.
Here’s a shorter video of Maia in full pond blob mode. This is what she will look like for up to a couple of hours. Elephants have slow respiration—breathing about six times per minute, so this is entirely normal behavior…for Maia at least.
Hope your Saturday is as relaxing as Maia’s is!

January 31, 2021 at 6:30 pmMaia totally fascinates me, full of admiration for her, if she had been allowed to remain wild, I think she would have been a very strong herd member, and mother, aunt, cousin, it breaks my heart she was never allowed to do this. I would love to see all her sweetness again that she gave to Guida at this sanctuary, their years of peace and freedom together. She is gloriously making the very best of her life and doesn’t seem to miss the near company of her species much, and she looks fine, a very fine lady, but it bothers me greatly that we humans robbed her of so much. it would be lovely to hear your insights in to Maia, what changes you have seen in her, who she is now. ..
