Maia is well known to be the sanctuary’s resident sleepyhead. She will fall asleep after meals, during foot treatments, or basically any time she wants a nap. Maia has also been known to like some affection when she’s sleepy and will push her stomach through the horizontal fence posts when she’s lying down, to get some belly rubs from her caregivers.
Here, you can see her just barely managing to keep her eyes open after breakfast. Still, she seems to want some extra closeness from Scott, so she decides to hold his hand with her nose. He’s happy to comply.
P.S.: Aren’t those long eyelashes gorgeous?

April 16, 2022 at 3:11 pmLovely post.
By the way, the New Yorker of last week has a long article about the current situations for several elephants in captivity. Tough go, and important.

April 30, 2022 at 12:31 amI was just rereading today, ‘Last Chain on Billie’ by Carol Bradley. The 1st words in her book were, ‘Scott Blais opened the gate to the barn…’ She said in Acknowledgements that the book could not have been written without you. I’m so happy that you didn’t have to wait long to hear the great news that P&G will come to GSB. I just knew it would work out. Another rescue in the long line of rescues for Them. Just stellar! I’m Rooting for You Both Always

May 22, 2022 at 4:58 amLovely photos of Maia. Great story of her freedom from chains and circus life. People don’t realize what captivity robs critters from having a good life. You folks do a fantastic job of caring for these elephants!
