Maia – Exploring the Space

While Maia has had access to Yards 4 and 5 for several weeks, she gave Bambi (and therefore Rana and Mara) a wide berth most days. With Mara, Rana, and Bambi near the barn this past week, and with Lady in Yard 3, Maia has largely had Yards 4 and 5 all to herself.

When she realized this, she did a long walkthrough of Yard 4. She eventually ended up across the creek in Yard 4, which has been relatively untouched recently as Mara, Bambi, and Rana haven’t spent much time in that area. They prefer the mud wallow, pond, and grazing near those locations.

Maia can be seen in this area from the office – grazing all day with her ears flapping away.

Photo of Maia, peeking at us (and her dinner).

How wonderful that each elephant now has choices. It must be difficult for them initially to adjust from their previous lives where they had none.

It seems Mara is spending some Zen alone time getting to know herself better, and your Zen Mara photo matches.

Kind sad, isn’t it? But loving another means that it hurts when you lose them.

We don’t see it as sad, as much as we perceive Maia evolving. And, truly, we do not know how dynamics will change as our herd grows. It’s all a process of learning and adapting.
