During the afternoon, since Lady was in the male Asian yard, the other five elephants had access to Yards 4 and 5. We found Rana, Mara, Bambi, and Guillermina in Yard 4 around dinnertime, but Maia did not show up with the group. Since we know Maia loves her food, the caregivers drove around to look for her to deliver her dinner and found her in Yard 5.
Maia at first didn’t seem that motivated to come for her meal, which is more than a bit surprising, but soon it became clear why. She wasn’t quite as hungry because she was already arriving to dinner with a mouth and trunkful of hay. She surely picked it up somewhere deep in Yard 5, because hidden snacks had just been spread out over that area. Maia must have gone all the way down the hill and back up with hay – likely when the caregivers were driving up to find the other four girls. So, Maia ended up with a bonus mouthful to go along with her scheduled grains, fruits, and veggies.
