Maia and Bambi Happy Together

Bambi and Maia have been spending more and more time together lately and their friendship has absolutely blossomed in a way that both somewhat surprised us and also delighted us. Perhaps their hours together across the creek in Yard 5 gave them time to bond and talk about Bambi’s challenges and struggles. Of course, we don’t know what or how they communicated, but whatever it is, it seems to have created a close relationship quickly.

Watching this video brings to mind how Maia was on the outskirts of the other elephants for so long. Maia seemed unsettled around Bambi shortly after her arrival, so this coupling feels a little miraculous but, considering the ability to choose that sanctuary provides, isn’t actually all that surprising in retrospect. In fact, watching them together – so affectionate with each other – brought tears to many eyes, most of all Scott and Kat’s. This is a side of Maia that supporters who followed when Guida was here have seen, but will be new to many others. Morning celebrations like this were a normal occurrence in those days. We weren’t sure if Maia was ever going to open herself up to another elephant this way again, so to see this from her – and for Bambi – was beautiful.

In the video, you can see the two elephants standing side by side, with Maia occasionally gently touching the medicated spot on Bambi’s face with incredible tenderness. The rumbles and trumpets could likely be heard across the habitat. The two ladies seem excited about their budding friendship and want everyone to know it.

P.S.: This week’s podcast explores Lady’s first days at sanctuary and her special way of communicating. Kat also goes into detail about osteomyelitis, which Lady deals with every day.

Tears welling up here, as well. Happy tears, for both of them sharing such a lovely moment and hearing them! Music to my ears. I love when Scott asks the Girls quiet questions and you can just tell they are listening ❤️❤️❤️. Soooo happy to see this for both of them, but to see Maia’s joy and hear her vocalizations is what put me over the moon ❤️🐘❤️. A heartfelt thank you for sharing this moment with us! 🥰

I am sure this was covered in, previous, blogs, but, please, tell me what the, individual, sounds mean? I, already, know that they are happy. Rumbles?, Trumpets?, Squeaks? Are, both, elephants communicating?

They can mean different things depending on the circumstance, the tone, the pitch and urgency, etc. You learn which is which with experience. In this case, the girls were so obviously happy that it wasn’t hard to tell.

Still does not describe the difference, in meaning, between a squeak and rumble and a trumpet!
