Maia and Rana Eating Side by Side ❤️

Maia and Rana

It can be difficult at times to find the elephants when they are out in the habitat. They blend into their surroundings surprisingly well for such enormous creatures. Last night was one of those nights when the sun was setting and the clouds were just right, making their bodies the same colors as the tree trunks and shadows. After spending some time looking for Maia and Rana, Scott found Rana with Maia nowhere in sight. Rana seemed content and in a little bit of a silly mood. Scott fed her and then headed off, looking for Maia. After searching for a while longer, he doubled back to check on Rana to see if Maia had shown up where Rana was. She had. He found them both side by side, sharing food.

Usually, if Maia approaches an eating Rana, Rana will feel displaced and walk away from her food. Maia will then help herself to whatever is left. Instead, last night, they were sharing Rana’s pile of food and seemed at ease about it. Scott couldn’t feed Maia where she was, so he put (most of) her food a little bit away. Since Maia ate some of Rana’s food, he saved a bit of Maia’s food to give to Rana, to make sure everyone had plenty of food. It’s a sign of how their relationship is growing and evolving. Watching Maia and Rana calmly and peacefully eating, side by side, was a beautiful thing. We are grateful to be able to share this glimpse with you (Maia is the darker one on the left; Rana is on the right).

Such a gift to witness a gentle, natural evolution of the relationship, an easing of trust, allowing free choice, out in the open ~ when anyone can simply walk away…for a while…and return when ready. No judgement. Just being.

Again a welcomed detailed acount of the girls enjoying time together. I really felt in that moment with them. It is encouraging to learn that Maia and Rana are spending time togehter…both healing from the grief they feel after losing a best friend (and long time sister in Maia’s case). Here they eat, side by side, sharing and finding strength in the peace and the quiet and togetherness. Glorious!
