Maia and Guille were eating side-by-side at dinner in this video. Guillermina was enjoying her hay but, as she will sometimes do, wanted to check Maia’s to see if hers looked any better. So, she walked around Maia and leaned in to check Maia’s pile. But Maia, expecting this move from Guille, gently picked up her portion and placed it just out of Guille’s reach. Guille only gets a small mouthful, so she walks back over to her own pile to continue eating.
There are many evenings when Maia takes her turn checking out Guille’s meal – walking over and taking hay to replace what Guille “borrowed” from her. This constant back-and-forth continues until all of the hay is gone. This process of mutual sharing is light and casual between both elephants. It seems they have the system all worked out so that everyone gets plenty to eat.
