Maia and Guillermina found themselves together one afternoon and we decided to give them a treat that was also an activity. There were some leftover fruits and vegetables from the morning. We placed some carrots and apples in the water trough, giving them the opportunity to go “fishing” for snacks. Maia is a smart cookie and knows that carrots sink, while apples float. Most elephants will often go toward the most visual food first, which is harder to grab, and is what Guille did by focusing on the apples. Maia, however, was very clever about figuring out that carrots were in the water, so she searched for them, with plenty of luck.
P.S.: You might note that the water in the trough is brown with dirt. This is because the two girls had put their muddy noses inside. It was all cleaned and refilled after Maia and Guille’s fun adventure.

October 9, 2023 at 9:58 pmHow hot is it there now? Is it hotter than usual? Is the rainy season coming or a few months off? Both girls are super smart and Guille learns from her friend!

October 10, 2023 at 9:42 amright now it’s mid 80s, but had been in the high 90s, which is not normal for here. we have had some rains already- it started early, but then we didn’t get anything for a couple of weeks. but we should hopefully start having normal rains in a couple of weeks.
