Late Night Trumpets

On a recent evening at about 8pm, we heard four or five large trumpets coming up the hill from the habitat. Normally, if all is well, they would be followed by a softer trumpet or Mara squeaks, signaling an all clear. There are times when the elephants wake up and their friends are not nearby, so they trumpet as a way to call them; that usually results in a quieter call back, as if they are saying “It’s okay. I’m here.” But on this night, there was no return call, so we went down the hill to check on everyone.

We didn’t know who was trumpeting, though we ruled Lady out. But after arriving in the habitat, all seemed to be calm. Guille was the most alert, following the 4-wheeler as it drove around. The others were all grazing. However, after dinner they’d spread out to various corners from where they had eaten. While Guille was strolling around, Mara had walked over to snack by the Lollipop Tree. Rana was wandering in Yard 5. It took us some time to find Bambi and Maia, but they were eventually located in the tall trees of Yard 5. It’s possible that someone got startled by wildlife and trumpeted out to her friends, but by the time we got to them, no one seemed stressed or worried. Perhaps someone just wanted to call out a happy goodnight. Regardless, there was an easygoing vibe in the yards, so we left the elephants to their normal evening activities.

It must be quite something to hear trumpets at night, though I imagine you’re pretty used to it! I wonder what the neighbours think ☺️

I’ve always wondered if you guys get any sleep since you kind of have to be on call, always listening and watching to make sure everyone is ok. I hope no one is sleep deprived!
