Recently, Lady has been showing up near the barn at 10 p.m., right around night feed time. She will either arrive right before us or be approaching as we come.
Frequently, at that time of night, Bambi is socializing with Mara and Rana along a fence. The three of them are generally quite noisy, and Lady may be approaching due to the vocalizations.
We give Lady the chance to decide if she wants to stay close to the others while they eat or walk off to her own piles of hay. Because of her recent curiosity, we don’t want to dissuade her from staying close to Mara and Rana if she is comfortable. If she seems interested in them, we will give her a little something close while we put more hay out in the habitat for her. This way she doesn’t feel like she is missing out no matter what her desires are that evening.
It’s always interesting to see how each little shift causes a ripple effect with the other elephants.

November 19, 2020 at 4:54 pmThose little signs are quite telling of her desires but still a little shy of total comradeship. Sweet Lady, we love you!

November 19, 2020 at 6:31 pmIt is fascinating to read how things change every day by small amounts in the dynamics of building a herd without the benefits of blood related elephants and also at the ends of their lives. But least they are now having so much more that they ever had and it shows. Just think, none of them have had the benefit of family, sisters, aunts, no babies and also not allowed to be babies themselves or seldom being a mother. Between you all, elephants humans, you are doing a wonderful job.

November 19, 2020 at 11:05 pmAlways enjoy going on these learning journeys with the girls and you two who break it down making it easier to understand. Elephants are quite complex but adding to it the years of abuse and neglect compound things even more so thank you for being there for them. You already know with so many elephants in crisis they need many more devoted people just like you two, much love and big hugs from Minnesota, Tammy

November 20, 2020 at 3:23 amThe Lady must keep a close watch on the behaviour of her people. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this gorgeous giant spirit would leave her boundaries. Wish her this social alliance. Go LADY Go. ???

November 20, 2020 at 11:54 amOh, such a complex package is our Ladybug. Little signs, hints, every now and then seem to speak of curiosity, a longing to feel part of the herd, maybe, but not ready to make the interaction. Perhaps Lady needs the “excuse” of food to give her her own reason to be there at 10pm…..a kind of safety net in that complex mind of hers.
Brave moves for this special girl, take the time you need, sweet angel, your sisters will wait……and so will we even though we long for you to find a friend and be part of the herd.
