Some people often wonder if, because Lady chooses not to share space with the other elephants, she gets sad or lonely. Our sense is that this isn’t the case. We feel certain that she communicates with her herd mates in her own unique manner and she most definitely has ways to show that she’s enjoying herself.
Lady came closer to the barn earlier this week, into Yards 1, 2, and 3. On this particular morning, by the time the caregivers got to the barn with the elephants’ breakfasts, Lady was in full party mode. Plenty of dirt had been kicked up around her, so she’d clearly been having a ball for a while.
Mateus managed to record a little bit of her celebration on his phone and, though the quality isn’t perfect, it’s too good not to share. He was being cautious because if we get too close to Lady when she’s extra festive, she stops what she’s doing and goes about her calm, easygoing business. Luckily, this video caught some of her spunky side, as she kicks things around and makes all kinds of noises. Lady certainly doesn’t seem to mind that no one else is around. She’s happy with her party of one.
The day before was also the first time that Lady came into Yard 3, where Pocha is buried. We know she did go into that yard and spend some time, but no one witnessed her visiting Pocha’s grave. Of course, that doesn’t mean that she didn’t stop by, since she was in the area all night. At this point she’s still going back and forth between the yards closer to the barn and Yard 5, choosing where and when she wants to go, as it should be at sanctuary.

November 7, 2022 at 2:44 pmThis is great! I’m sure a lot of your regular followers wonder about Lady and her solitary life. It’s wonderful to see her thoroughly enjoying that life.

November 7, 2022 at 2:44 pmSo amazing! She has moments of joy and bliss!!! So good that you all respect her privacy. It may be possible that she one day may want to fill the void, in her own way and time, that Pocha has left. Just hoping, really!

November 7, 2022 at 4:43 pmYou might have posted it previously, but when Pocha died, was she brought into contact with the body so that she could relate her own goodbyes and give her some understanding of the death?
Sara says
November 7, 2022 at 5:03 pmShe was given access to the area but didn’t go over to the grave that we saw. However, she was there all night, so we can’t say if she did or not.

November 7, 2022 at 5:24 pmLady makes her own kind of music 🥰. Am I recalling correctly that she likes bushes, trees, branches, etc.? How adorable to see her at play.
Sara says
November 7, 2022 at 6:09 pmWhen she’s having her parties, she likes to play with brush. But she loves to wander in the denser parts of Yard 5.

November 8, 2022 at 1:55 amWonderful to see, thank you to Mateus for catching that show! While Lady doesn’t choose to socialize closely with the other elephants, I like to think she still takes comfort in knowing she is not alone and there are others of her kind nearby, and the atmosphere is happy, safe and relaxed.

November 8, 2022 at 2:38 pmLady was the first elephant I watched the caravan bring to Sanctuary. So good to see her this happy. I’m one of those who worries she doesn’t have any “friends” but you’re right she’s fine. Party of one. Blessed to be there.
