After the recent rain, we’ve been experiencing a temperature shift here in Mato Grosso. Things started to get chilly a couple of nights ago, so Lady decided the best activity for the evening was (obviously) a dip in the pond. Lady, as always, does exactly what she wants.
The weather isn’t too cool for swimming, and all of the girls know how to regulate their body temperatures during colder evenings. Elephants have the ability to store up heat from the sunshine and release it gradually throughout the day, which allows them to stay warm at night. Still, it was a charming surprise to find Lady soaking wet at dinnertime – all smiles and rumbles.
As for the rest of her time, Lady is still spending hours wandering in Yard 5, although in general she is staying closer, with occasional trips to the barn for foot soaks. We haven’t seen any increased interest in Pocha and Guillermina. For the time being, she’s content in her routine of seeking out her favorite spots in the wilder areas of the habitat.
