As Scott explains in the video, oftentimes Lady anticipates her meals and meets us at the fenceline to be fed. But other times, she prefers to continue doing her own thing and stays in one of the more wooded spots in Yard 5. We are happy to accommodate her wherever she is – as always, making sure she gets all of her food, medicine, and special treats. Since she didn’t get her foot treatments in the morning, she will likely head to the Yard 5 training wall later in the day for her foot care. But while routine can be good, it’s best to let the elephants make their own decisions about what they want, which is exactly what Lady was doing here.

April 12, 2023 at 3:36 pmI am curious as to why they must still be fed hay when there is such a lot of lucious green grasses around them.
Kat Blais says
April 12, 2023 at 7:13 pmunfortunately, most of them are compromised in several ways when they arrive. many being significantly underweight, some up to 1500 lbs. 85% of their diet comes from the environment, but the hay is supplementation. in the rainy season they get a flake with meals and a little bit in the habitat, but it’s not remotely near the amount that captive elephants generally get.
