Lady On the Move

Though we are constantly working to stay in tune with each elephant as they grow and change at the sanctuary, we do have a significant knowledge of what their behaviors can be like at times. That’s why it’s interesting to get the perspective of a visitor who doesn’t have the same history with all of the girls as we do.

For instance, visiting caregiver Nicole was on her way to feed Lady dinner near the barn in Yard 5. By the time Nicole got to the fenceline, it seemed as though in a matter of seconds Lady was nowhere to be found. It took a little bit, but eventually they tracked her down at the back of Yard 5. Though we are used to how quickly Lady can move when she’s feeling spunky and spry, Nicole was impressed with her speed when taking into consideration how compromised Lady’s feet are. We think it’s lovely when Lady is able to charm other caregivers, but it was also nice to see the recognition of Lady’s strength and understanding of how capable and independent she is.

P.S.: For those who guessed the mystery elephant on Saturday – if you picked Maia, you’re correct!
