As we’ve talked about in the past, it’s important to make sure that you are as attuned to what an elephant wants and needs as possible, in order to allow them to have the greatest amount of autonomy.
Lady recently indicated that she was interested in spending some time in the smaller yards near the barn, after a significant number of days in the male yard. She stayed closer to the barn for a couple of days, getting in some nice foot soaks. After that, she seemed to want to head into the back of Yard 5, which she hadn’t gone deeply into for a little while. We shifted the other girls over to Yard 4 pretty easily so that Lady could have some time in her favorite haunts. After a couple of days there, she returned closer to the barn again and had some more foot soaks and treatments.
After a while, she walked over to the pathway near the male Asian habitat to make sure we understood that she’d like to go back into that yard for a while. She’s been excellent at communicating her needs lately, so we were happy to give her access to the yard again, where she spent most of the day grazing.

March 28, 2023 at 4:36 pmIf she wants to go into another yard, she’ll generally just walk in that direction toward the fence and look.

March 28, 2023 at 8:09 pmI was wondering if the sanctuary staff has seen any changes with Lady due to her recent “encounters” with Rana, like maybe less of a reluctance to be near the others.
