We try to share Lady’s brave moments when we witness them, like when she stands close to another elephant or not walking away when others approach. Like with any progress, sometimes it’s one step forward and two steps back. Sometimes, it may not even be about progress; it may just be about her mood or someone else’s mood.
The other morning, Lady was near the barn while Mara was in a neighboring yard, also near the barn. Mid-morning, she headed to the barn with intention – she may have been looking for a quick foot treatment (and the treats that come with it).
She came over the hill, saw Mara near the adjoining fence, and, without slowing down, she turned around, went back up the hill, and went on her way.
It made us smile to see her decisively turn and march off. Apparently, it wasn’t a social kind of morning. While many of you may prefer if she made different choices, after a year here, Lady is very confident in her decisions, even as they change each day based on her mood.

December 3, 2020 at 4:17 pmShe’ll become part of the herd when she’s ready. It’s good that she has choice to do what is comfortable for her.

December 3, 2020 at 4:19 pmThat’s actually good to hear. From my experience with dogs, confidence is one of the cornerstones to growth, to anything good, really. And it comes from the feeling of security sanctuary is giving her. I’m happy to hear about where Lady is at in her progress from the experts!

December 3, 2020 at 6:52 pmBless her! She now knows it is HER choice to walk away, or be socially present with another elephant. BIG progress for LadyBug. I have not seen the progress on her feet that was in such bad shape. Maybe I missed that post. Once again, thank you GSE for such tremendous care, knowledge and patience you give these deserving girls.

December 3, 2020 at 9:24 pmTo be or not to be! lol Who cares at this point! Lady is doing great! As a categorized ‘Senior’ gal myself, I will decide if I want to be part of the “circle” in my complex. I much like Lady’s independence. Sorry if that thought is out of the box lmao! As a 55 year old women, I am set in my ways and “been there, done that”! and I do NOT want someone hanging around in my place everyday. IMO Lay is a mature, independent gal!

It is what I try to believe what Lady thinks 🙂
She is at the best sanctuary for elephants, and all the other animals staying there, no doubt!
