We often talk about how much Lady enjoys the grass in Yard 5, and this is just one example of how much she takes pleasure in her walks and her grazing. This was later in the day, after dinner and Lady was down by the pond, in a very spunky mood.
Lady is cleverly trying to pull the leaves from this particular type of grass because she prefers the tops with the seeds on them. During the rainy season, when you have an abundance of grass around you, there’s no reason not to pick the choicest pieces for your snack – and that’s what she’s taking the time to do. It’s just another moment where the bounty of sanctuary seems simple, but is so important to the daily lives of the elephants who live here.

January 3, 2023 at 3:07 pmI often wonder why the elephants still search out and enjoy the dinner of hay that the Sanctuary people place around the Sanctuary when there is so much fresh growing greenery. I imagine that hay would be dry and tasteless compared with fresh growing grass and leaves. Obviously I am wrong. Do we know why hay is such a treat for them?

January 3, 2023 at 3:10 pmLike the produce that seems to come with it, they appear to see it as a special treat. Hay can be flavorful, depending on the type of grass it comes from, so they may find it to be tasty. They certainly seem to like it.
