Lady Crossing the Creek

When it’s time for dinner, Lady is always ready for her meal. As we’ve mentioned, the elephants are very familiar with the sound of the 4-wheeler and what that might mean: food. Here, Lady is headed toward the noise from the motor since she knows it means supper is coming. She is stepping over a small portion of the creek in Yard 5, en route to the fence line where all of her goodies will be waiting. She’s delicate, yet confident, in walking toward her goal.

Even if motivated by food, it must feel wonderful to have the girls come running (or ambling) to greet you like this …

It’s a sign of her stoicism that she walks so much on those so poorly feet. And your foot soak programme and everything else you do. I understood more about the benefits of foot soaks recently by watching the YouTube videos by Elephant Care Unchained, so I learnt about abscesses and overgrowth of necrotic skin caused by abscesses, why nail trimming and allowing the necrotic growth to to get out is necessary. Then I looked at a research paper about elephant foot disease, so nowI understand a little more of her problems and your treatments. And of course the shocking effect on elephants feet through walking or being chained on concrete and how their foot health is even more compromised when they stereotype using there whole bodies to sway and rock. I understand why you say you can only make it better not heal it completely, I understand more when I look at her feet now. Would you say that elephants with less bad feet than Lady, ie Kaavan whose feet and nails are deformed by his previous life, can ever be cured by soaking and cutting away the deformed nails bit by bit?

It’s almost impossible to say, since it would require an examination. Weight distribution can play a large role and it’s very specific to the individual.

We are still in agreement with the ecoparque that sanctuary is the best place for them. We believe we will have more information on Pocha’s death soon that will shed light on the situation.

Gracias Sara.
