Lady and Maia have regular “dinner dates.” They both seem happy eating dinner near each other frequently – through the fence, of course. They observe each other and seem to be comfortable around each other.
Supporters periodically express concern that Lady could be lonely since she hasn’t made friends yet in the traditional sense of touching and sharing space. Even though she isn’t sharing space with anyone else at this time, she seems happy about being around other elephants – from her distance of the day.
She doesn’t appear to be lonely – she seems incredibly happy about her life. She has her firm ideas about space and boundaries. Yet, she seeks out watching the others in the same way she seeks out puddles to splash in, mud wallows to have parties in, and trees for scratches. It’s another exciting new pastime of hers.
We are sharing each milestone as it unfolds, but, sometimes, frequency is a milestone in its own right. Dinner through the fence is the new normal, and one that doesn’t get old to watch.
In the video, Lady is the first elephant you see and Maia is… the one who shoves an entire palm in her mouth at once (volume on if you want to know what that sounds like ? )

February 12, 2020 at 4:30 pmLady is doing her very own thing. She is keeping a distance from the other elephants maybe because of a bad experience in her past or she is timid and shy or both. I believe she is happy and feeling her freedom!

February 12, 2020 at 4:47 pmBrought tears to my eyes. I’ve watched three times in a row. Sooo happy for them – and for Lady to be at ease with another elephant nearby. How special of Maia to be so patient with Lady. We all need friends like that…

February 12, 2020 at 5:22 pmSometimes it takes a lot of time. We do not know enough of Lady’s past so just have to observe how she acts right now and she how she progresses. As you always say, in her own good time.

February 12, 2020 at 6:31 pmI think Maia showing up for Lady is the sweetest thing, as is the deepening bond she is forging with Rana. She really is growing, too, isn’t she? It’s wonderful to hear, and see, how comfortable Lady is becoming with this, looking forward to dinner dates and watching the other girls get their pedicures and such. It’s such amazing growth on all their parts. Thank you all for all you do for them.
My Ramba Effect shirts came. I bought two of them, one purple and one cranberry/maroon/reddish colored. The funny thing, and sweet thing, is the colors bleed onto the beautiful picture of Ramba, the purple one is reminiscent of her natural grey color and the reddish reminds me of her rolling in her many colors of mud. The really are beautiful, and the quality of the tee shirts themselves is great. The drawing of her is stunning, I felt funny folding one up, , I laid it out for a bit to get a good look at our girl. I miss knowing she is there, but wish her happiness wherever she is now.

February 14, 2020 at 5:46 pmMaia and Rana are together most all of the time. Lady is kept separated from them by her choice. Until she is showing that she is comfortable enough to share a space with them, she gets to make the choice as to whether that happens. That’s part of the autonomy of sanctuary – allowing them to make their own decisions with everything, and that includes whether or not she wants to be with the other elephants. If an elephant runs away from other elephants, clearly they are not ready. It’s her option and choice. And Lady is not ready to be put in with Maia or Rana – again, because that is her choice.

February 15, 2020 at 5:35 amThey both seem pretty chilled out, and lunch dates certainly seems a good thing to promote. Maia’s palm trees leaves! Same old Maia, she is delicious! So good to see all of Lay’s progress and enjoyment
