Periodically, the care team uses a backhoe to pile up dirt and sand for Kenya and Pupy to play in, and Kenya makes a big dent in it, getting in lots of exfoliating in the meantime. She digs into the dirt with her feet and trunk, loosening it up to be tossed just about everywhere. Kenya also likes to lie down in the pile of dirt, leaving big belly prints for all to see. Her big African elephant expressions and motions make an appearance here, as she gives us a good head shake, patting herself on the face, seemingly in delight.
There are lots more bugs at the sanctuary than Kenya was used to at the ecoparque, so her tail is getting a workout here, swatting pests away. She isn’t always elegant in the ways she dusts herself. You can see that sometimes she’ll manage to get the dirt directly in her eye or her mouth. Perhaps she’s just being thorough. She eventually walks away, but we suspect she’ll be back at the dirt pile before long.

Help take extra special care of an elephant that is close to your heart.

August 4, 2025 at 4:38 pmOh those simple things in life we take for granted in an elephants life something so natural as dirt makes a huge difference in their health how they feel how they look how they protect themselves from the elements. Watching them having so much fun enjoying themselves is priceless! 🐘💞🐘🦋🐘🪷🐘

August 4, 2025 at 6:48 pmIt’s just so nice to see here there on dirt with grasses and lots of bushes and trees and a beautiful blue sky. No concrete, no cage. She must be so happy and relieved.
