Much of what we are able to show of the elephants through photos and videos represents just a small portion of their lives. Most of their days are spent on their own, doing normal elephant activities – which is what this video reflects.
The elephants tend to know about what time meals will be brought out, so they come over and eat their snacks, get supplements and a little checkup, but then right away they turn back and start grazing. They return to “elephant time” almost immediately after. It’s incredibly important that we let them get back to their normal lives and just do elephant things.
Here, Mara takes the lead by turning around to graze first. This is a little bit unusual, as she tends to follow others rather than lead in these situations. Bambi comes to join her and then Maia stops by after that. It’s encouraging to see Maia being part of the group, all of them relaxing and spending some laid-back time together.
P.S.: If you enjoy swinging elephant tails, this video has lots to love!
