I’m Sleepy. I’m Happy.

Rana

This is Rana’s “I’m sleepy, I’m happy, the sun feels good, and I might fall asleep” face, which is a common sentiment among the animals here lately.

Routines are slowly shifting from rainy season routines to dry season routines, and it’s a nice change after a few months of rain. Everyone is well here, and it’s quiet. We couldn’t ask for anything more.

They sure do. All of our elephants lie down. In captivity, there are definitely elephants that don’t lie down to sleep – it’s generally a comfort issue with their surroundings. Whether it be other elephants that they don’t trust enough to lie down because the spaces are so small that lying down is such a vulnerable position. Sometimes it is a fear of not being able to get up because of their physical compromises. Sometimes it’s distrust of human staff. But yes, they do lie down when they are comfortable, but they can go a very very long time without lying down to sleep. And unfortunately, many elephants in captivity do just that.
