The subject of poop at sanctuary has come up before in our posts. Keeping an eye on how much the elephants produce and its consistency tells us about how much they’re digesting, how well they are tolerating their diet, and if there are any obvious irregularities. We also do periodic tests on their feces to make sure nothing out-of-the-ordinary is going on. 

The caregivers, as one of their daily tasks, clean the yards of waste and track where they find it, since that helps us know where the girls are going, even if we don’t see them travel there. At first, Baby’s poop stayed closer to the barn, which told us that was the area she was most secure in. Today, caregivers found only one pile in the barn–from overnight–which is a nice development. Interestingly enough, they found a number of piles near the corner of Yard 1, in the area closest to where she can see the other girls in the Female Asian Habitat. Baby seems to be leaning into her curiosity about the other girls.
