Turn up the volume!! Maia apparently raced out to the pond after breakfast this morning and beat us all there. When Guida caught up there was a little mini party. This is something we’ve seen in other elephants, even if they were just together a few minutes ago, it’s a celebration when they see each other again. It’s quite endearing and is a testament to just how much they mean to each other.
Along with vocalization you will see that they are constantly touching each other, smelling temporal glands and trying to put their trunks in each other’s mouths- it’s all part of the ‘reunited happy dance’. There’s also some happy ear flaps and silly straight out tail action going on. Just the many ways they externally show their joy.
