One year ago, Rana arrived at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. For those that saw her when she was still at the hotel zoo, Rana is a very different elephant. Rana was one of those elephants that changed significantly right away but has continued to grow and heal over the past year.
Some lessons were harder than others. Guida and Maia taught her that sometimes loving someone isn’t enough. Her pushy affection was turned away, and Rana had to learn to put other elephants’ needs before her own. She also discovered that sometimes change isn’t enough, and time is needed. Rana has always rolled with what has come her way and continued to find her own joy while navigating what it means to be an elephant.
With Ramba’s arrival, Rana was much more patient, even somewhat overly reserved- confusing Ramba as to whether she wanted to be friends or not. Once Rana felt confident Ramba wanted to be friends; all of the walls came down. Now we all get to witness the joy having a best friend has brought to Rana and what a good ‘big sister’ she is.
Rana, like all of the elephants, will continue to grow and become an even better herd member. But she is quite lovely the way she is. We are grateful to be part of her life and to be able to offer a life of sanctuary. Thank you to all who made it possible, who have followed along, and found a place in your heart for sweet Rana Bug. ❤️

December 21, 2019 at 10:44 pmRana Bug 1 year on and how much she has changed its mind blowing! Delighted for her that she has learn’t how to play the friendship etiquette better now, it has certainly paid off with Ramba and I’m really happy for her. she was so desperate for a friend. It must have been torture to her being on her own at the hotel, I’m chuffed she appears so happy now, and her fused leg joint doesn’t hold her back. Huge thanks to all who care for her, she is a joy to watch
